My Testimonials for 2011

02/26/12 I'm in the process of updating this page. I moved in April of 2011 and got a new computer an email. I was so busy I did not keep up on putting testimonials into a folder to save them, therefore you will see gaps for 2011's postings.

Below you will find testimonials regarding the products I make and sell in my store and on eBay and Etsy and things my customers have said about my pet rats as well as complete strangers I've helped with rat behavioral questions and medical issues from across the country. Even though I may not know someone personally I'm always here to help anyone who writes me, as everyone's pet is important to me not just my own.

Below are the exact emails people have sent me. I've removed their email address and their last names to protect their privacy.

Hi Kat...
No, please don't remove our name.... I want to stay with you and your rattery as I think you have a great thing going and seem to really know what you are doing in breeding "quality rats"! I would anxiously, but patiently, wait for when 2 little girls come our way.

It's ok to wait a few more weeks, as I would rather wait for the right pair of girls. Yes, please, please keep us on the list. Hopefully it will work out for us that we get to adopt a couple girls in late Feb or March.

Please keep up posted.... I'll check in periodically, but we would still love some pics, even if they are not ours :) Do you post any on your website?

Happy New Year and look forward to meeting you maybe a little closer to March

Kathleen

Hi Kat,
Rachel Dyvig commented on your wall post. Rachel wrote: "I took him to the clinic last Wed. and the vet made sure it wasn't an abcess. He said it should be pretty simple to remove, as it feels very contained and is right below the skin, so I think I'm going to have it done tomorrow. It was already looking bigger today, which concerns me some. But he seems to be doing well, so I don't think he really notices it. And at least it's hidden under his tummy, so the other boys won't be able to investigate it as easily tomorrow! Curious, crazy guys! :) At least I'll be working tomorrow, so will be at the clinic and able to check on him all day. Thanks for your help and I'll send you a message Tuesday! The ratties send you warm, fuzzy hugs; and a big thank-you for the condo! They are crazy about it, and it's just their size!"

Good Morning, Kat!
Sorry that I didn't get the chance to email you sooner, but I do want to let you know that I received my hammocks & bonding pouch a couple days ago! The package really made me smile! :) I love the pattern on this material! Thank you so much!

I also wanted to say that I will be terribly sad when you retire from breeding... :( I am DYING to come back to Michigan and adopt some more of your awesome ratties, but I just can't at this point in time. After reading about all the horrible politics and drama, however, I can't blame you in the slightest for wanting to get away from all that! A couple years ago I thought that I might like to have a small-scale rattery someday when circumstances permit, but I have DEFINITELY changed my mind! (Despite the fact that there are literally ZERO quality ratteries around here, at least as far as I can see!) You are SO courageous and admirable and wonderful for doing what you do!! :)

*BIG HUGS!!* to you; and Happy New Year, too!

Take care,
- Holly.

Hi Kat...
How are you?

We are doing great! Zippo, Snoopy and Miss Maisy are such a joy to us...the boys just LOVE playing with them and the girls are SO friendly! Well worth the wait!!!
I am having a problem with their toe nails...they are just SO sharp...we are getting heaps of tiny scratches all over our necks each time we play with them. I was wondering if you ever clip their nails...or if you have another suggestion as to how to keep them worn down and not so sharp?!?

Thanks for your help...

Hi Kat my name's Georgia--I'm a fancy rat lover too! I used to raise rats as a small hobby but now I'm in college=no time/no room! Still addicted though :) I look for new rat websites weekly and I just came across yours and I think your lines are absolutely beautiful! My favorite morphs are masked/variegated/blazes and it's hard to find breeders who have mastered these traits. I understand your waiting lists fill up unusually fast because of this. (No surprise)

I wish I had a bigger place and time to start raising again cuz I really miss it! Plus, now that I've found your site I think that's the only place I want to adopt from! Anyway, just wanted to say you have some beautiful animals and keep up the good work!
-Georgia

P.S. Do you show any of your rats? Because some of them are definitely show quality. You may even be able to introduce a couple new lines to the species.
Thanks again

Dear Kat, Hey there ~ got the hammock ~ thanks! Can I send you a cute picture of our boy rats? My husband took it last week before your hammock came. It's of the three of them smooshing themselves into one of the other hammocks we got from you over a year ago. It's all ripped up but they still cram themselves in. I need your e-mail address. Let me know. Thanks! Wendy :-)

From: (Pamela L)
To: NorwegianRattie@RatDippityRattery.com

Hi Kat,
One more thing.... those carrying sacks you make are the best. We use them every day. We can put both rats together in one of those and carry them around. They will curl up together in one of those sacks. They rarely sleep in the hammock in the cage together. Most often Patch would be in the hammock and Anakin would sleep in the open on one of the shelves in the cage. So I bought a plastic house and put fleece in it. Anakin now uses the house to bury food in it and sleeps outside the house on the fleece.

Thanks Kat

Hey Kat,
Now that we have the XL size hammock and have moved them around, both of my mom's cats are enjoying them. It's hard to find them NOT in the hammocks! Thanks for the business cards. I don't know whether or not you can use any testimonials, but feel free to use the following if you like:

Kat's hammocks are one of the best investments that we've made for our cats. They absolutely love them! We looked at other hammocks available for sale. But none of them matched the quality we found with these. Keep up the great work!

From: (Shannon O)
To: NorwegianRattie@RatDippityRattery.com

Hello Kat,

I’m hoping you remember me. My name is Shannon and you made my pet ratties a hanging condo about this time last yr. You made it for me out of maroon and white fabric for my husband that attended Texas A&M. My ratties, Happy and Chubs, LOVE their condo. So much that they’ve chewed almost all the filling out of the bottom. It’s gotten pretty hard to wash because it’s so chewed up. So I figured it’s time for another condo. I’m not sure of the exact size you made me last time but it cost $15.50. My ratties are boys and have grown quite a bit. But the size I have still seems to be good for them. Do you have any “boy” condos made up? If not do you have any fabric to choose from?

I love to see my rattie boys sleeping with their little hands and faces resting on the opening of their comfy condo. So precious!!! I can’t wait to get another one of your condos that my boys love so much.

Shannon

Hey Kat I hope you made it through the holidays ok. We had a pretty good time in Texas although it is strange to have a green Christmas. When you have time I would like to order a bag of food a 4 shelf mats. I would like the cloth ones and don't care what color. HArd to believe I have had the ratties over a year. They chewed up two of the shelf pads while we were gone and the urine smell is hard to get out now. I have never had anything last a year with rats LOL. You do make very good stuff. I have the same pouches and hammocks I had in the beginning too :-) Hope all is well with ya

MORE THAN A RAT

As rat parents, we live the deepest love and suffer the most earnest sadness of a complete lifetime many times over in our own lives.

We watch our children grow from hesitant, shy or questioning pink babes to curious, rambunctious teenagers; testing the limits of their siblings, exploring new corners, new tunnels; tasting new baseboards or new boxes; stealing treats from each other; learning to ride on shoulders. We give them names like Stinky and Cookie and PoPo JeeJo, and talk about them with other rat parents.

We see them emerge as confident adults, enjoying the fruits of their environment but always content to go back home after a busy play time; sometimes slowly waking up from a full day of sleep as we return home; sometimes running to cage doors to greet us as we awake each morning to their loving faces, all tired out from a busy evening of nest-building, sibling-picking, cage-climbing fun. We are always and never surprised at their creativity…waterfalls sculpted of stolen tissue, food bowls buried under mounds of litter, bedding surreptitiously moved from one location to another.

We watch the fullness of their adulthood, sometimes producing babes of their own, sometimes never recognizing they had been neutered. We cherish their response to our touch; amazed that such a perfect, intelligent creature could at all be interested in our voices, our hands, and our activities. Sometimes we stare forever at their feet…perfect in every way; or stroke a tail wrapped around our chin. We marvel at the connection we have – different than with a cat, or a dog, perhaps a bit of both, but always deeply emotional.

We watch them age, their fur growing less silky, less soft and shiny, their eyes clouding with time. Sometimes our hearts sink as we caress a small lump nestled under a leg or detect the telltale rattle of myco in an elderly breath where a churr used to be. We see the slowness of limbs and the thinning of bodies with time; feel the hipbones and the shoulder blades where once was hearty muscle. We often are confronted with the grumpiness that comes with elderly aches and pains and we respect that and touch with gentle kindness and compassionate understanding.

Within two to three years our little friends have lived a full life. To us, it is a microsecond. Just a moment in time that we have been blessed to be acquainted with one, or two, or twenty, of the most incredible creatures on this earth. We have laughed so hard we cried, we have learned so much and smiled even more. We have been delighted and saddened, comforted and heartbroken.

On this God's earth, there is no companion quite so devoted, so communicative, so loving and so mesmerizing as a rat.

Hi again Kat! Hope you had a good holiday season. Things have sure been busy around here. I've been trying to reach Michelle at CMMR here and there since we last spoke and have not had any luck yet. I hope everything is okay and she is just having computer trouble or taking a break from breeding for a bit. I was hanging out on your website again tonight looking at all your new cute ratties, reading through articles you wrote, and checking out your store.

I am so impressed by your hammock sets! There is no question you put a lot of time into trial and error revising them to get perfect ratty dream hammocks. The design ideas you have are amazing. I wanted to purchase a couple of the 5-pack hammock sets. I'm hoping for one set in a feminine color/pattern and one set in a more masculine pattern/color. I eventually want to purchase several more sets to make it easy to swap them out and put new ones in while they wash but I have to mind a budget so I'd like to go with 2 sets for now. If you could pick 2 sets for me and let me know the grand total to paypal you I will send a payment. I'm not too picky of the patterns, just want to stick to my somewhat girl themed cage and somewhat boy themed cage :) I have been meaning to get some fabric and make some new ones my self but for the price and quality of yours I just would be much happier giving you some business.

Man I wish you were closer, I would come adopt some of those ratties you have in a heartbeat. I squeal with joy every time I look at them. If I can ever manage to get a hold of Michelle I'd be happy to split airline shipping costs with her for us to each get a few.

I've been making some headway planning my rattery. I got registered with NARR and AFRMA. I've got my website almost ready to launch. Now if only I could find a good mentor to help me get started... its really frustrating being a newbie. I'm glad that there are good people out there such as yourself willing to chat and answer questions because the rats is the reason they are doing it in the first place... not having a need to feel superior to everyone around you, knocking other people, and other such things. It's really too bad that the rat hobby has to be so political.

Aimee

Hi Kat!
I got your note about the missed swing hammock. We haven't received the hammocks yet, but no worries!! Yeesh! Don't feel bad - it happens and you're making it right so why should I get upset? I know some people do, but I never did understand those people -- and I would like to think that anyone who would get upset over something so trivial is not a pet owner! Besides, after all the help you have given us, not to mention the superb communication and the fact that I just know you are one of those rare and wonderful caring people, I could never be upset with you! :) Stop worrying! *hugz*
When you mail out the missing hammock, try and send it as cheaply as possible OK? Don't go spending extra trying to get it here quicker or anything - go with the economy rate. We are in no rush! The ratties will enjoy the hammocks that are on their way (especially since Jaz and Ariel seem to be eating the ones they have now (we purchased some off of a lady who is a member of the ratty owners group we belong to (it's a web-based email forum - if you don't belong to it, you should --- my hubby can give me the addy)). These hammocks don't have air vents so Jaz and Ariel are making their own! LOL! Finks! AND they have a beach towel that is hanging outside their cage to discourage staring cat eyes that they chew!

LOL - now that I think of it, any suggestions to stop them from chewing your creations (and occasionally our hoodies and t-shirts *giggle*)? It's a good thing they are cute! :)
So - no worries! Send it cheap!! Wrap it to protect it and squish it into a manilla envelope and send it if you can!

Hugz,
Chris

Subj: Victory: No More Animal Testing for Lipton Tea!
Date: 1/31/2011 12:46:56 PM Eastern Standard Time
From: newsmanager@peta.org (PETA)
To: norwegianrattie@ratdippityrattery.com
Dear Kathryn,
By making the compassionate choice, you saved a rabbit similar to this one.
Victory! I'm thrilled to announce that after more than 40,000 people worldwide, including supporters like you, took action against the makers of Lipton tea and after representatives from PETA and our affiliates in India and Europe flew to London to meet with Unilever—the world's largest tea maker including the Lipton and PG tips brands—the company has agreed to end all non-required animal testing for their teas and tea-based beverages worldwide.

With this victory, the suffering of animals for Lipton and PG tips teas ends. As you know, the company behind Lipton tea cut holes into rats' intestines and fed them tea ingredients through a tube in their throats; infected piglets with E. coli toxin and cut their intestines apart while they were still alive; killed mice by suffocating them and breaking their necks; cut off rabbits' heads; and conducted other cruel tests that involved tormenting and killing animals simply to study the health effects of its tea products and ingredients. Not one of the experiments that the company conducted was legally required for beverage makers, and regulators have stated that animal tests are not required to prove a health claim about a food or beverage product.

Thanks to all our members like you who called, e-mailed, and boycotted Lipton tea products!

Please take a moment to thank Lipton for its prompt and compassionate decision by e-mailing the company using its contact form.

With your help, we look forward to many more victories for animals who suffer and die in laboratories. Please remember to buy only products, such as Lipton tea, that are not tested on animals.

Thank you for your compassion for all animals.

Very truly yours,

Ingrid E. Newkirk

I was wondering if it was possible to get the condo house instead of the hanging flat bed hammock? I really prefer the condo house but the only set I noticed it comes in is the five piece and that's just too much furniture to get for one rat in the cage my ratty will have and I dunno if there is a price difference in what I'm asking for versus the five set, but I'm crossing my fingers haha.

I really love the tunnel, the four point hanging hammock, and the condo house. The fabric pattern I liked the most was the 013A although do you have a aqua or cyan colord fabric to put in place of the orange? Or maybe a royal purple or even a toxic green or forest green? I love that skull Halloween pattern fabric it's really nice!

I want it to be warm durable and semi chew safe lol

I know that's a lot to ask but I just wanted to put it out there what I would want if possible, I understand if I'm asking too much though, please get back to me soon I would really love and appreciate any help or answers on the matter.

I'm I'm very excited to be doing business with you, I've heard a lot of good things about you from my friends!

Wow!

They're gorgeous!

Our rat cage now looks more like a piece of art deco Ikea furniture than a house for rodents :-)

You did great work.

Perhaps when it comes time to order replacements, we can devise a less frustrating fabric combination for you than terry/upholstery.

Pix attached of the new luxury rat cage (with 3 of your new hammocks installed). Martha Stewart would be proud!

I don't blame you for not wanting to post them on your web site -- no need to make folks think you want more of that type of work ;-)

Still, as you can see, the rats love what you did for us.

Actually, I really need a new tunnel or two. They have started to chew up the one I have. I love the carrier. When I bring them home from school, I just carry them in that, and then have a second cage at home. I love, love, love these boys. Very sweet; never a nibble on a finger.Very personable. I hope you stay in the breeding business because I would definitely meet up with you again to get another pair in the future -when these sweeties are gone :( How much are the chew toys? And what was the cost on the tunnels? Only thing I really didn't need was the second carrier (the one without the flap). But that's OK. I put it on the second floor of their cage at home, and they sleep in it. Favorite treat so far-a walnut with peanut butter on it, or a little piece of salami!

Hi Kat!!

We received the hammocks and yes, we are indeed missing the swing hammock from the 5-pc set. LOL! I'm sure it will be in the mail in the next couple of days. I have to tell you Kat, your hammocks are gorgeous! Your photos definitely do not do them justice! I have hung the 'puzzle pattern' hammocks between our girls' two cages. The bigger girls have the tunnel hammock (which holds all 3 of them at once - even when they are fighting in it! LOL!! It's hilarious to watch the hammock jumping around with much squeeking coming from the inside!) and the round snuggle mat (which is now inside their house again - it was outside during the day! ). They have been chewing at the snuggle mat, but I guess you can't get away from that can you? My younger babies, Jazzy and Ariel have the double layered hammock and the swing hammock. Both of these designs are ingenious! You are one creative woman! The girls LOVE the double hammock and I don't have to tell you how cute it is to see noses poking out of one of the openings! Oh, and the hatch in the top of the tunel hammock - love those rattie noses!

Like I said, we had purchased some hammocks off of a girl on one of Rattie groups and they are nice, but nowhere near the quality yours are! Wow - VERY impressive and you definitely know ratties and what they like! I did email my friends who have ratties and gave them your email address, along with the link to your eBay store. Hopefully you'll be hearing from them soon! :)

Alright, must go and get some work done, I have been procrastinating long enough!

Hugs and rattie kisses!
Chris

Hi, Kat -- I just wanted to drop you a note to thank you for the wonderful 5-pc rat set & for shipping it so quickly. :)

I adopted 3 little girl ratties (now 6 wks old) last weekend -- they LOVE the tunnel! All 3 have been napping in it since I put it in their cage (after exploring it first, of course!). And I love having the versatility of the 5-pc set so I can rotate pieces to keep their environment more interesting. So much more fun than having the same boring hammock all of the time.

You've made some happy ratties even happier! I look forward to purchasing more from you in the future.

Best,
Mercedes

Well I picked up the parcel yesterday and everything is sooo pretty and well-made! I put the one with the four peek-a-boo corners into their home right away and they went crazy- climbing on it, in it, swinging from it. Thank you for the chew toy- I will put it in today after I give everything a nice cleaning and put the new pads and hammocks inside the cage.

I've seen many good sites with good information on making homemade hammocks and toys, but as a full-time university student and the single parent of special needs child, I have noooooo time for extra little hobbies. The super big cage I got and the nice new covers and beds make looking after my babies fast and easy (two of my favourite words!). As soon as I have a little more spare cash, I will be ordering another 5 piece set from you- hopefully that will be very soon!

Thanks again, and I will send another message with photos when I have everything set up.

Susan

Hi Kat!

It was great seeing you again too. Thank you so much for your kind words! I hope we can give the boys a great life. They are already out of their shells. They're bouncing around, wrestling, chasing everything and getting into trouble! Remi is getting better too. He was running around on me right along with Raphi. I love it! I introduced them to Tuck last night. He seemed very happy to have them around. After all the sniffing and squeaking, they were chasing and attacking each other..playfully I think...lol. Tuck was definately trying to get them to scratch around his ears. He kept putting his face down so they would play with him. It was great. Im glad they accepted each other. It'll be round two tonight!

Don't feel bad about the money! Ash was an AWESOME rat and I got to spend alot of time with him (its never enough with ANY of them). He was well worth every amount that I spent on him. If I had to do it all again with him, I would. Things just happen sometimes and it was his time to go. It was sad but definately not anyone's fault. You run a great rattery and I can't imagine the money and time that it takes to keep everything going. I'm grateful for that and I'd gladly pay more if I had to! So don't even think twice about that!

I'm just happy Tuck has new friends and I'm sure they are all going to be together for a very long time! They'll be kissy monsters in no time! Right now they're wrestle monsters..but boys will be boys...lol.

Take care and thank you again for the boys! Talk with you later!

Elishia

Dear Kat,

Hi! Got the hammock for my Ratttie girls & its sooo well made! Had to add some chain/clip extensions from an old bed to it so it would hang low enough for them to be able to get in it but now they're all over it investigating...lol. I have left very positive feedback for you & will let you know how they settle in to it hopefully with a picture ;)

Even my cat went to watch them, as they were moving around so much. :) So another winning toy!

BTW, age is finally going to get Mirage. I felt a grape-sized lump in his abdomen today and his stomach is getting fat-looking, so I'm guessing he must have a tumor going on in there. But he was my longest lived rat ever, so I am in amazement at how long he's been here. He sends his mama his love!

Subj: rat update for Biku and Oso!

From: (josh w)
To: Kathryn Lovings
Hello Kat, this is Josh and Beth here with Oso and Biku. I'm long overdue for an update so I thought I would send you a quick note and some pictures. The girls are over 5 months old now are doing great! We've recently moved into a new house and they love their freedom. They are very energetic and adventurous but are really great about not getting into too much trouble. They rarely chew on anything outside their cage and never leave messes behind while out exploring. Biku is much more personable than Oso, she loves to run all over and lick your fingers and hands (and ears and lips if she can get close enough.) She also lets you flip her over for a good belly rub. Oso is alittle more cautious, but still likes to be pet (not so much being flipped over.) I've trained Biku to chase my fingers, she'd run in circles for hours if we let her. She'll also follow behind you as you walk through the house. We have definitely been turned into rat people, we can't image what it would be like to not have them around.

I'm sorry to hear about your current situation. I hope everything works out well with the move and you get back on your feet soon.

Ive attached a couple photos, i wish i had more but i'm sure you understand how difficult it is to take a good picture of a rat!

best regards,
josh and beth (biku and oso too!)

Kat,

Good day to you! I am very sorry to hear of your predicament...I hope all will turn out well for y'all soon. My family and I will be praying for y'all. Zebadiah would like to order a couple of pet rat supplies for Levi. We would like to order one Homemade Hanging Chew Toy (024A), and one Two Piece Pet Hammock Set (012N). Levi is doing well. He enjoys running around the house, sneeking an occasional bite of my wife's house plants, and he follows my wife all over the house wherever she goes. He is funny! And as my wife just said, "He doesn't even mind having his toenails clipped!".
Thank you.

Hello,
My name is Carolann and I bought one of your sets off of E-Bay, before I saw this site. Anyway, I love it. You do very good quality work and I would like to get another set, if possible. Can you send me a picture of your material called something "art"? It is gray and looks like graffiti???? I love that and would so fit into the "NY Rat theme" that I want to go for. I am from NY, now in MN and think that would look so cool. I don't see a set on E-bay. I am not sure if that is something you would be willing to do but I figured it would be worth an e-mail to ask. Thanks again and it was a pleasure to do business with you.

I looked on your e-bay store and I really like the 3-piece set with the sparkle spots on it. It is item number: 370482444843. If that is not available I will take any 3-piece set with the tunnel, hammock, and swing hammock. Our girls LOVE your hammocks!

Let me know how much I owe and I will just pay through Paypal and then we can avoid ebay. I live in Sacramento, California (if that affects shipping)

Re: Dwarf space requirements
Oh, and I suppose the thing to do would be to find a reputable dwarf breeder. Finding a standard size breeder in my area has been impossible, so Heaven only knows where I'll find a good dwarf breeder within a couple hours drive. As it is, Pittsburgh, PA is a little over 2 hours north of me, and they have a rat rescue there, so they should have breeder info too...I've looked at their site several times and I've never seen rescued dwarf ratties, but they have had some beautiful regular size rats.

They have a few right now from a lady in Ohio...evidently she had a couple of females and needed a pet sitter for them while she went on vacation. A guy she knew said he'd watch them for her but she'd need to bring them to his house. So she did...turns out the guy was a breeder (feeders, I'm guessing) and let his bucks have at her does. Needless to say, she ended up with two litters that she didn't want or need, and so the babies are in the shelter right now. Reading that last night really drove home the point you made about shady dealings in the breeding world. To me, for him to breed his males to her females without her permission (not to mention the lack of regard for any kinds of standards) was tantamount to rape. What an a_ _hole...pardon my French.

Talk to you soon. :-)

Wow... the rats are GREAT!!! Daisy is a busy busy little girl! always exploring and on the move and always giving kisses! lol Lydia is finally coming out of her shell. She was very shy and timid at first, but Drew has been very patient with her and she if following in daisy's footsteps.

I took them to drew's afterschool program and the girls were a huge hit with the kids! They seemed to like the attention too.

I am so amazed at the difference between them and the petco rats! They are so worth the 2 1/2hr drive!

Thank you for the wonderful pets!!!!

You are most welcome. My only concern was that I received it and it was in good order, which it was-- as everything else was taken care of, I had no reason to leave a poor review. I appreciate you taking care of my concerns in a timely fashion and that you are willing to discount me on a future order. My youngest pig is quite taken with the hammock and I have woken in the mornings to find her snuggled up, fast asleep in it, which is enough to make me feel it was a good purchase. If I can convince my gerbil or hamster they would like one, I will be back for a smaller hammock.

Thank you again, for taking care of the order.

Dear kat,

Hi, I just purchase this, and then received in the mail another set I ordered from you a few days ago--the 2 piece pastels and butterflies. This set was fleece on both sides and I love them!! So much I just ordered your other set too. Now, my question is, can you do custom [plain] colors? My boys cage is royal blue fleece and zebra [black and white] on the outside. I'd really like something like the pastels and butterflies that I just received [meaning-double thick fleece], but in royal blue and white and/or black fleece [doesn't have to be zebra]? Is that at all possible? You have lots of other cute designs but they are more feminine [haha] and wouldn't really go with the rest of their stuff... ??? [tho now my girls cage is adorable!] Thanks!

Hi Kat!

You know, I should just stop asking because when my hubby got home tonight and brought in the mail, guess what was there? You got it! :) My ratties houses and hammocks have arrived! Too funny....last time I asked the hammock was in the mail.

I suppose I could have found out earlier had I ventured outside, but I have a nasty cold so I said forget that! :) Anyway, they're here and they are WONDERFUL! How do you do it? You have an awesome talent! I have to say! If I could just stop them from chewing up everything....silly ratties!! I even give them "chew fabric" - pieces of fleece that I cut up and put in their cage and line the hammocks with and they still chew the hammocks! Apparently you make delicious hammocks! LOL!

We love the houses and since it was conveniently rattie cage cleaning night (it's very exciting for them doncha know!) they each have a condo hanging in their cages. The one group of princesses - Jasmine, Ariel and Tiana - have already plugged up the front 'door' of theirs! Guess it's bedtime! LOL!

Indeed you are a contractor for "Habitat for Ratties" and we are the mortgage holders of their new house - they really are spoiled! Good thing they're cute!

I'll have to see if I can get a good picture of both cages with the condos in them and hopefully some noses poking out and send it to you. You can add it to a 'happy customers' page! ;P

Thanks again Kat -- once again, you have outdone yourself! If we are ever in your neck of the woods, we'll have to drop by and visit! I'd love to give you a hug in person and thank you for all the hammocks!

Take care of yourself - I mean that! Make sure you take time for yourself so you don't get stressed out! Moving is very stressful and you need to take time to shut down and regroup your thoughts -- maybe with a nice long bubble bath with some fragrant candles and soft music -- or curl up with a good book in front of the fireplace -- whatever your pleasure, make sure you do it! Mental health is just as important as physical health! Listen to your nurse! ;)

Talk soon! (Yup, I'm hearing happy sleepy rattie noises!)

Oh, Kat, that is truly heartbreaking.....it's so sad that the economy has gone into the toilet! You guys should not have to live like that! It's too cold in Northern Michigan to live in a camper! You are further north than we are and it's plenty cold here for me! Oh how I wish I had boundless cash so that I could help those who need it and truly deserve it. I can't help but be disgusted and saddened when I hear stories like yours. This should not have happened to good people like you and your hubby! Damn globalization and free trade! It's the neoliberal policies that result in the rich getting richer while the middle class and poor suffer. Makes me sick! :( And I agree that it's insane that we need a passport to travel between the US and Canada.

What is going to happen with your Rattery? Will you still be able to continue with that and your sewing? So your moving situation is doubly stressful than it should be which is not fair!! Please remember that if you have ANY medical questions feel free to ask me and I will do my best to help.

Please take care and I do hope (for selfish reasons of course for my ratties!) that you continue to do business with your hammocks. You should really patent your designs, but that would cost money...*sigh* Frustrating!!! On a happier note my smart girls found both enterances pretty much immediately! :) LOL...

Stay well!
Hugs,
Chris

Hi Kat.

This is Christine B. I live in Upstate NY. We communicated quite a while back about some of your rat babies.

I am writing you because I adopted rats from Shelley Walker over the past few years. They are all my pets. I am not a breeder.

Part of the adoption contract is to let Shelley know of health issues and the passing of ratties I got from her. I have emailed her a few times letting her know of losses and I received no response at all from her.

Now I notice her website is down and her facebook page is down too.

Did she stop breeding? I hope Shelley, her family ratties and are ok.

I'll stop writing her if I know she does not want/need the information. It is hard enough to write about losing my little guys but to receive no response at all from her, the breeder, just makes it all the harder to deal with.

I hope you do not mind me writing to you about this....I did not know what else to do.

regards,
Christine

Hi Christine, Yes I remember you. :>) I hope you are doing well.

Yes, I would stop writing Shelley as she has closed her rattery.

She embezzled funds from her customers last fall and people were threatening to take her to court. She had to take her Facebook off line because of the nasty posts people were leaving on it.

And health and living conditions were reported to a national organization that has started to track abused and shady operations of various ratteries around the country. Because of her business errors and the lack of proper health and housing of her pets she was forced to close down.

People she embezzled money for ratties and products she promised them but never received and the bad living conditions of her animals as reported first hand she has been "black flagged" in the breeding community. If she can't get outcross stock or get anyone willing to work with her as a breeder it's impossible for someone to breed under those circumstances.

It appears Shelley is not what she seems and she blindsided a lot of us including me who she got most of her breeding stock from, plus other members of the rattie club she belonged to. We found out she lied to another breeder saying she only wanted their rats for pet only but was going to breed them, she didn't honor breeding contracts with other breeders, falsified/forged pedigree certificates, just a whole list of unacceptable behavior that eventually lead to her demise.

We all thought she was so nice, so smart, and really held her in high regard because of her being a sixth grade school teacher, but it appears she's a school teacher of shady repute and I feel bad for any children under her supervision.

She has a horse and horse trailer that I delivered to her last summer that were never paid for. I was allowing her to make payments on them because I thought she was my friend. She took advantage of me and used me in about every direction that she could. I looked at her like my own daughter...it broke my heart to be treated in the manner she's treated me.

So long story short. You won't hear from her and yes, she's stopped breeding and our biggest concern is she'll show up again under a new rattery name somewhere down the line like nothing happened and sucker in a whole new group of people.

Thanks, for writing me. If any of these rats you have, have ancestry that belonged to RDPY or rat dippity rattery I'd like to hear what happened to them and the names of the parents as they would be ancestors to my own lines. So though she might not be interested in what happened to her animals I am. So fill me in on what they died of and who the parents were as I'm sure I have siblings to those parents in my rattery.

Receiving this knowledge no matter where I get it from helps me make better selections in my future breedings.

If none of your ratties trace back to RDPY lines then disregard, otherwise if you could tell me date of birth and death and parents names that would be wonderful.

Hugs!

Kat

Hi, my name's Erica and I bought two rats, Petra and Bean from you a little over a year ago. I felt bad that I hadn't updated you on them so I decided to do so!

Both are absolutely adorable. Bean started off biting a little and she was originally a little feisty but after a few months she calmed down and now she likes to be held and pet. Petra was wonderful to begin with. I take the rats out every day for an hour and let them run around the kitchen floor. I've set up barriers so they don't escape and I make sure they don't nibble on any wires or eat anything on the ground that might hurt them. For fun I put food here and there so that they don't get bored and retreat to their little hut. I clean the cage every one or two weeks and replace their food and water every few days. I've attached some photos so you can see how they've grown. Thank you so much! They are an absolute delight.

This was just too cute. I had to repost it. A friend of mine from Facebook sent it to me. It shows the perfect nature of our darling pets and why we love them so much.

Re: hi kat

yeah i hope he gets ALL better on this medicine, too!!!
he has definitely become part of the family, not JUST a pet. especially since voodoo & murphy died. we were in the process of trying to get the 3 of them to like each other enough so they could all be roomies. but then murphy got sick & died, b4 squish & murph were able to make to that stage. then after ALOT of hard work & ALOT of patience & ALOT of supervising breaking up fights voo & squish were able to live together. then voo lost his battle w/the myco virus. & now squish lives alone. sad i kno,but i think he gets quite enogh attention, then he deals w/not having a roomie jst fine. we have tried briefly to see he would want to play w/the girls (under supervision) , but he either jst doesn't care & walks away or a fight will start to break out. so now his cage is nxt to the couch,in the living room,& he is OUT of the cage more often then he is IN the cage.

when we first got him,he was very shy, skittish, even bit me once when i tried to take him out. but i didn't give trying to socialize him,now he jst a big baby. looves his people & looves to cuddle. will even wake u up in the middle of a sound sleep jst to get a good rub behind the ears!! LOL

squishy is about a yr old. we told he was born on march 31,2010. but i'm not 100% sure this is accurate info. the breeder(s.w.) was kinda unreliable .

well jst wanted to stop in & say hi & say thanx again for all of ur input,u have been a GREAT help. i don;t know what we would have done w/out ur help. u are a good person ;~)

Hi Kat,

I sure do hate sending you these messages...but Sody is no more. I'm guessing it must have been a tumor that burst open last night, but I don't know. It could have been an abcess, but I read that it's quite common for rats to get tumors below their ears, and this was my third one in that spot.

He was fine as ever yesterday, but when I came home last night, there was this oozing, icky lump below his ear; and his breathing was terribly labored. I gave him a drop of Baytril, as I had some for a couple of other guys, and I thought, if it's an abcess, it won't hurt to get that on board. He tried to eat a bite of banana chip, but the mouth didn't work anymore.

He made it through the night, so I took him to the clinic with me today. The vet thought it was an abcess, but said the breathing was what really concerned him. His lungs sounded good, so the lump was constricting his airway. He got an injection of Baytril to try to help him, but he went downhill the rest of the day.

His fur was puffed up, eyes nearly shut, and by 4pm, he was mouth breathing. He was looking pale around his face, and we decided to put him to sleep. I'd hoped to see a bit of improvement, but knew he wasn't going to make it much longer with the mouth breathing. He looked so miserable and just leaned over Solo for most of the day.

So, yet another rat is gone...and it is sad. He was a beautiful boy and such a joy to watch. He had a really sweet personality too.

Right now, it looks like Solo will be following next in that cage. He has lost almost all use of his back feet. There is no pain or swelling evident, but he kind of holds and drags them as he walks. He's lost some muscle mass (but I'm not sure if that is mainly due to old age). What have you done for that? He can still climb, as he is quite strong in the front, and his eating it still good.

Thanks so much Kat! (I saw your breeding schedule for this year, and am thinking that if you have a black masked male this fall, I will make one last trip out to get 2 last rats.)

Right now, I am trying to get an application finished for full-time missions, so would hopefully leave the U.S. in 2-4 years, so wouldn't be taking rats with me. :(

Love you Kat, and have a warm evening! Talk to you later!

~Rach

I am contacting you on behalf of the Northern Illinois Rat Organization.

NIRO is a club that is dedicated to encouraging proper care and ownership in the keeping and breeding of pet rats as well as educating the public about the merits of rats as companion animals.

NIRO will be hosting its sixth annual Fancy Rat Show on May 21, 2011 in Valparaiso, Indiana. A rat show operates much the same as a dog or cat show where exhibitors enter their rats for judging by a certified judge and points, titles, and ribbons are awarded.

NIRO also places a strong emphasis on educating the public about rats and provide several sources of educational material at our shows as well as provide opportunities for the public to meet rat owners and breeders and allowed the opportunity to interact with rats themselves. Our past shows were such wonderful successes and we are hoping that this year's show will be even bigger and better!

During show hours, we conduct a raffle as well as a silent auction. Any profit that is made from these events benefits NIRO so that the club may continue to educate pet owners by holding events, hosting seminars, and creating educational materials.

We would be extremely grateful and honored if you would consider donating an item to be used in our silent auction and/or raffle. Anyone who donates an item will get a free business-card sized ad in our show catalog as well as publicity on the NIRO website.(We also offer further advertising opportunities in our quarterly newsletters; this is an amazing chance to reach a very specific target audience - contact NIRO’s Secretary Beth Chan at NIRORat@gmail.com for more details.) If you were one of the contributors in 2010 - thank you! You helped make our last show a success! Hi again Kat! I hope you and your ratties are settling in well after the move. I wanted to place another hammock order. My ratties LOVE your hammocks so much and it's time to get some more sets so it's easier to wash them and have spares to swap out immediately instead of waiting 2 hours. They go nutso without them that long on cleaning day hehe. Plus a couple are starting to get chewed to the point they will need replacing soon.

I saw these on ebay and would love them all:

Just let me know the total including shipping and I will send you paypal payment. I think you sent an invoice last time, that worked nicely :) Bryan (fiance) will be paying like last time. I am always so lazy about getting to the bank and he has direct deposit :P We finally have our wedding date set for June 19th! :)

Also I managed to finally get in touch with Michelle at CMMR and am starting to talk with her. She does seem very nice, I am so happy she is back to breeding. We are going to go on a coffee date and discuss mentoring :D I'll definitely speak with her about going in on a shipment from you when you get things up and running again.

Take Care,
Aimee

I was wondering if you could make something custom, actually. it would be a covering for a top shelf of a cage. pretty big, i think 22-24 x 17. and if so, how much would it cost? Your stuff is amazing so I really hope you can help! Thanks

So, Raji peacefully slipped away, wrapped in a pink cloth and new stocking hat. He looked like a little rattie in a sleeping bag. What a dear! And what an amazingly-long life! He will be missed, as not only did I really love him, but as they leave, I know that I am nearing the last rats I'll have, which is bittersweet.
Hopefully, I'll get to see you this winter for one or two final rats. Also hope that moving is going well for you. What a big change, and I know it must be hard too.
Love you Kat!

Hi Kat!

I keep meaning to email you, and I keep forgetting...until now. I LOVE my little rats. They are the cutest things ever. They are super super friendly and love cuddling and giving me kisses. They also like to pee everywhere haha. They adjusted very well. They were introduced to the cat, and they actually scared the cat haha.

On a more negative side, they are starting to sneeze :( When they first started, I gave them VetRX which worked great! However, I don't know if it was because I didn't do it long enough, or because it wasn't strong enough, but they are sneezing again. It is not extreme, but they are sneezing. I listened to Zoe, and she sounds like she is wheezing a little bit. Also, Zoe is skinnier than Penelope. I am not sure if it is because Zoe might be sick, or if Penelope is stealing it from her. Either way, I am planning on taking them to the vet hopefully tomorrow to make sure everything is OK.

Thank you so much. I could not be happier with them.

Thanks,
Chelsea=

Hey there Kat,
Just wanting to let you know the girls are doing fine and are attached at the hip. I open the door and Ilsa jumps up half the cage to lick my fingers. Katrina likes to nap on my chest for an hour or so at a time. They've both grown up to be extremely loving rats. It's cute to see their fat little bellies pressed against the cage as they stretch up to greet me. They both seemed a little lonely in that big ol' cage so I got them two more sisters to cuddle with. My count is going to have to stay at four though because my boyfriend says no more. But we'll see how long that lasts. Hope things are going well with your babies.

Hi Kat,

I haven't written in quite a while so I thought I'd give you an update on my sweet boys that I adopted from you. Dewey will be 3 in August and Rylee will 3 in October this year. They're both the light of my life and have brought me so much love and joy. They're seniors now and on and off of meds frequently. Dewey has almost completely lost the use of his hind legs and Rylee is close behind him in this regard. It makes me sad to see them struggle so much just to move. ) = I do try to make them as comfortable as possible though and have rearranged their living area to make everything as easy as can be to get to. I don't know if you remember or not, but we have found out that my husband is severly allegic to my boys. We thought for a very long time now that we would not be getting anymore ratties because of this once my guys leave me. After much consideration though we've come to the conclusion that rats are just the best possible pet and family members for us. Dewey and Rylee have definately made us rat lovers for life! So once they go to rattie heaven, we will be adopting more when we're ready. We've figured if I can clean their cage daily and completely wash it weekly, my husband can be comfortable and healthy with rats. I also wanted to share with you my first movie production that I just made starring Dewey and Rylee.

Take Care,

Michelle, Dewey, Rylee & Family

Dear kat, I don't mind. That is a brilliant idea! I know what your talking about when you talk about eyelets. Also, They do make us very happy. My rats are usually in the hammock most of them time, its like a too comfortable bed they don't want to get out of unless food comes or it's play time. I'm not the least bit surprised they leave your store very quickly, they are one of the best hammocks I've ever purchased for my rats and that's why I will come back every time they destroy one. I'll probably even just cut the fleece off of this one and still use the hammock itself and give them some shredded news paper to hide in. They sometimes even hide food in there hammock. Do you sew by hand or do you use a sewing machine? Everything is so perfect on it

Hi Kat,

I took them to the vet. She said they were both very healthy and looked good. She also said that most rats will get that upper respiratory infection, and that once they get it they always have it, kinda like tuberculosis. They gave me a double dose of antibiotics to give them for 7 days. After that, if they sneeze its ok, as long as they aren't losing weight.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Kat!

I was sitting in my chair the other day and was wondering how things are going for you. I hope things have gotten better!
I hope that all of your little ratties are doing well and your new home.

I need some advice for my little Pumpkin (or should I say my hefty Pumpkin..she weighs a bit over a pound!). I bought her a new hammock because she chewed all of her old ones finally to bits. I bought her a cheap one since I can not afford to buy her a set from you. Well, she refused to sleep in her new hammock and decided to sleep in her litter. What a complement to you! :) If she could talk she'd probably say, "Where are Kat's hammocks?! I'm not going to sleep in that POS!". Ha! She sure sticks to her taste!

So, to try and trick her,I put wash clothes on top of the hammock hoping she'd use them to hide under and sleep in her hammock (but it didn't work for long). Well, as a result of sleeping in the litter, her mycoplasma has really flared up. It sounds like she is going to die sometimes! I can't afford the 115.00 vet bill since I don't have any income coming in. What should I do? I'm afraid she is going to die because she is wheezing and gasping for air and isn't as active.

Sorry to email you with such bad news! I know this is the last thing you would want to hear, since you have a load of lemons too. I didn't mean to end up writing you a book, I originally just wanted to see how you were and seek some advice for Pumpkin.

Thanks for reading my email and for any advice you can give!

Brooke

Hi Kat,

I do have some good news! I called the vet and they agreed to give me some meds without seeing Pumpkin. Thank goodness! I did get some Baydtril and Doxycycline for her for 38.00. She started to take it yesterday and she seems a little bit better and is moving around more. Hopefully, this will save Pumpkin's life. I will be so heartbroken if she dies. But, if it does happen I will let you know. Also, I found two old bedding pieces I purchased from you long ago! I swore I had nothing left. I am so thankful! I changed Pumpkins cage yesterday and she is happily sleeping out of her litter.

Thank you for the advice. Well, I have to run. I will let you know how things turn out by the end of the week. I hope all is going well for you! Thanks again!!!

Hey Kat, I attached a picture from way back when I first got all my girls from you, it's got all of them in there. I still plan on printing some out and mailing them to ya, just been crazy and haven't been able to get to Rite Aid and do it.

I wish this letter was more cheerful, but Darling passed away last night. I'm not really sure why. She was doing great during the day, I was holding her and playing with her, and she was still hyper, jumping around the cage, eating her treats and everything. I came home from work, and went in to see them and she was just laying down on the top level, passed away...

I was wondering what would be best for Roobee. I think she's not doing too well, she keeps looking around the cage for Darling, I held her a lot this morning, gave her some more fluff to cuddle with. She looks healthy in that she's not skin and bones. She's not as big as she once was, but she's still eating good, she's got a nice belly going on, and her eyes look good still. But she's also getting slower. She's always been laid back and carefree, but I think she's getting slower in that it takes her longer to climb to the sides of her cage, and she'll pull herself onto the middle level, and then start again in a few seconds to get to the high one. I'm really afraid she's going to be climbing and then get tired and fall. I know rats need lots of room, so I wanted to ask you first before I move her to a smaller cage.

I have one that is 9.5 deep, 15 wide, and 14 tall. Would that be too small for her? It's got a middle level, so she can still get off the floor and look around. Or can you recommend a way to cut off the higher levels in my big cage? My big cage is 30 inches tall so it'd be quiet the fall if she did fall. Thank you so much for your time. I hope things are going well for you. I'll keep you updated on Roobee and how she's doing :)

Deepest Sympathies, Amber
