My Blog 2012
Latest News: 02/14/12
It's been a really long time since I've written anything in my blog. I'm writing a passage today because I'm distressed that there are people who are members of the online forum of Goosemoose who have been bashing me and my rattery in a thread that dates back to 2009. Basically the thread has to do with someone asking if there is a rattery in Michigan and when someone offers up my rattery name, others step forward saying to not have anything to do with me. These people have never met me, never seen my rattery or have met my pet rats yet they are making assumptions and taking things off my web site and using it out of context to make me look in a negative manner. Even when people who have actually met me and gotten pet rats from me stick up for me, in this thread, they still come back bashing me down. They are also using past mistakes I made years ago against me...though things have changed since then.
When I make mistakes I try to learn from them, correct them and move forward and I don't appreciate someone living in the past and bringing into the present, past data, as a truth. I've always been very honest with how I run my rattery and I put everything out there, both the good and the bad. The things I've done right and the errors I've made and the lessons learned from those errors...but they are taking bits and pieces of this information and compiling it into something not correct. One person even mentions out of the blue, that she heard I raised mean pet rats and even when someone tells her to read my testimonials page, because it states the opposite, they still continue to be critical of me.
I think the kind and honorable thing, for anyone who comes to my web site and doesn't like what I've written or how I go about doing things, would be to contact me personally to discuss their concerns...allowing me to defend myself and offer up my perspective, instead of publicly bashing me behind my back where I can't defend myself. I'm sure if the tables were turned they wouldn't want someone saying negative things about them.
There are very few people out there that are true authorities on everything to do with pet rats. It's a political environment where everyone has their own spin on various subjects and data is always changing pertaining to what is ethical and correct.
When I first started breeding you could feed your pet rats peanuts, cracked corn, and soy products were suppose to be so good for them. Years later...peanuts are a no, no, as well as the corn and soy...is very controversial right now. It's hard to keep up with the ever changing points of view and data being presented.
And there is one thing I am an authority on, and that is pet rat behavior. I've earned that right. I've raised 1300 pet rats in the ten years I've been breeding and that experience offers me knowledge. I don't care if someone claims they've been breeding 25 years, if they've only breed a couple litters a year they aren't going to have the experience that raising more rats would provide.
And people need to remember that I'm retired. I have time to devote to raising more pet rats per year. I don't have a family, school or a job that takes away from my time. I devote it all to everything to do with my rats. When I have several litters all born close together I spend hours each day socializing those litters. I have the time to do that...most other breeders don't and I don't appreciate someone saying I'm breeding too many rats...I have the time and I have pre screened excellent homes waiting for the pets I breed. Those are the important aspects that really matter...not a set number in someone else's head...it's what I feel I can handle that is important.
