11/02/09	Russian Blue Self Dumbo	Ok, I think this is a first! Look at Midnight's picture! LOL. I've never caught a rattie sticking it's tongue out before and even though there were other pictures where she wasn't I knew this one was a one of a kind! It is so cute! She is a deep dark slate gray, very pretty and very sweet. She is a very good example of what a true Russian blue fur type should look like and I'm very grateful to have achieved this level of excellence in my breeding results.	Update: 11/03/10 Sparkles one remaining baby gave up his brave battle to survive today at 3:12pm. He was very tenacious and I've never seen such a will to live. I brought him back from death twice in the last 24 hours giving him mouth to mouth when formula went down into the lungs. He had the will to eat but then would get air bubbles and take it in the wrong way through his nose and down his lungs. The constant fluid on the lungs that I just couldn't keep from happening no matter how hard I tried, (used all the ideas in Debbie Ducummon's Health Care Book as well as the article on her web site.) He had learned to lick the formula instead of suck on it and I couldn't get him to wrap his mouth solidly around the end of the eye dropper once I read Debbie's suggestion. So a combination of the formula in the lungs and the air bubbles in his stomach was just too much over and over again. I don't think I'll ever try to raise a baby from birth again. It is just too heart breaking to put all that time and effort into it and watch them go down hill slowly but surely despite your best efforts. My grief is over taking me...so ending this writeup... Update: 11/02/10 Sparkle died on her birthday. She would have been a year old today. Days like today make me want to stop breeding. The constant grief and sorrow of strange unexpected events gets really hard to take after awhile. Sparkle had an unexpected litter on 10/30/10 around 6am. She got rebred because I didn't know she was pregnant the first time until a couple days after she had her babies so the male was left in with her thinking she hadn't taken. So basically she had two litters in four weeks. I had just weaned her other babies and she gave birth again, totally surprising me. She was inside the igloo hut and the male was outside it but that wasn't unusual so I didn't think she was inside it with a litter until we went to change the cage, which we do on Thursday's. The previous Thursday she didn't even look pregnant that's why I didn't remove the male. There were nine babies. Two were stillborn. She had a long and hard labor. She had what appeared to be a stroke. She loss some use of her rear legs. She rejected her babies. I tried to raise them. I aspirated six of the seven remaining babies in an attempt to feed them formula. As of 11/02/10 there is one remaining baby. A boy. He is tenacious, but he has issues. There is either formula in his lungs or sinuses. And he may have air bubbles in the stomach and bowels as he tries to learn to lick the formula instead of suck on it, as I'm using an eye dropper to feed him. He has lost a lot of weight and seems uncomfortable. I tried to decide last night if I should just put him to sleep, but he is eating and pooping and peeing normally. As long as his body doesn't give out (he appears to have a very strong heart) and he's willing to try then I'm willing to support his efforts even if he is uncomfortable. The problems he is having don't appear to be life threatening. If I can just get him to two weeks of age where he can open his eyes and see what he is doing I think his discomfort will improve and he can live a quality life. His back leg is injured and he only has two of the normal five toes. I'm not sure if Sparkles nipped at them or how they got like that. I hope he can survive all the mistakes I'm making. I've been praying and leaving it in the hands of God for his survival. I've asked for divine guidance to steady my hands and give me patience. Getting up every 2-3 hours has been taking it's toll on me. I'm a grump and a B _ _ _ H. I don't know how Mother's of new born children can stand it, lol. I'm writing this in the afternoon of his four day. With Sparkle now gone he is the only thing left that she worked so hard to bring into this world and died for. I'm afraid to name him or get attached to him because his chances of surviving until he can see are very slim. As of 01/09/10 her health is excellent.
