UPDATE: 07/09/04 Jewel, was fatally wounded by a cage mate sometime between July 4th and July 8th. I had been away on vacation and when I came back I found him lying on the bottom of his cage, unconscious. He was still alive, but dehydrated.
I removed him and put him on a heating pad and gave him drops of water with an eye dropper. His tongue was hard and stiff, but his heart was still beating. His breathing was swallow. I noticed a bruising in the heart area. There appeared to be internal bleeding going on around the heart.
I thought the water was bringing him around. He regained consciousness briefly before passing away in my arms. It was almost like he had held on until I got home, so he could say goodbye before he left for the Rainbow Bridge.
He was such a wonderful rattie. He never picked on anyone. I couldn't understand how someone could be so mean to him. I discovered that Razz-Ma-Tazz was starting to bully other ratties in his cage and figured he must be the one who bite him in the heart area. Razz now lives in a cage by himself.
