Pearl is a very sweet rattie girl. She is extremely friendly and brave. She is always the first to come out to greet me, loves me to hold her and kiss her belly. She is gentle and, out going yet calm. She will make a great Mother someday and will pass her great personality down to her kids, I'm sure. She has nice, large wide set eyes but her ears are elfie looking. I'm going to choose a male with really nice conformation, when I breed her, to try and help with the ears. Her personality is great and worth working with. |
Update: 12/10/10 I am so sad to be writing this. After everything that Pearl has been through in her life that her life should end with a tragic event of a malfunctioning water bottle! Today I found Pearl and four other ratties dead in the big girls cage in the basement. My gigantic ferret cage. There were five others in this cage that were fine. We couldn't find anything wrong with the five that died, but what we did find was one of the water bottles at the bottom of the cage had been untouched, it was still full. Lee said when he went to check on everyone he noticed three of the bottles were empty but there was still one on the bottom that was full so he thought they had enough water. We think the bottle at the bottom was still full because it was malfunctioning, thus several died of dehydration. We have since replaced it with a new one. Pearl was the sweetest and gentlest little girl. She loved her babies so much and being a mother. I couldn't have asked for a better furry friend. I miss her a lot. She always gave me inspiration for overcoming adversity. May she rest in peace. Update: 09/05/10 Pearl had a litter of four healthy babies on August 26, 2010! She has had an abundance of milk to feed them and they have opened their eyes at ten days old. They are four days developmentally a head of the average! Way to go Pearl Girl! Update: 08/17/10 Pearl's eye has completely healed. She is off all medications and is doing great. Having the use of only one eye is not bothering her in the least. It appears she has a surprise for me too! It appears she may be pregnant! Update: 08/14/10 Pearl's eye is healing up nicely. The swelling is completely gone and I'm slowly decreasing the prednisolone drops. The injured eye is now smaller than the healthy eye but she can blink it and close it, therefore she's been getting very active and wanting to explore. The loss of the sight in this eye is not phasing her a bit. She seems to be gaining weight. I don't know if it's because of the prednisolone drops and lack of activity or if she might be preggers. I would be very happy if she had babies on the way as she is such a sweetie. She gives me kisses all the time. She is also very smart, she got the hang of the drops in the eye. As soon as I wrap her in the towel to hold her head still she is automatically holding still long enough for me to put the drops in. Then she gets a yummy treat, Wheatable's Golden Wheat crackers! She loves these crackers! Update: 08/08/10 I don't think Pearl was bitten I think her eye was puncture by a toenail. I don't know if it was her own trying to scratch and itch or if Catch's caught her eye. She is on amoxycillin and sulfacetamide Sodium eye drops, along with the prednisolone acetate eye drops, though I'm weaning her off from those and just working with the antibiotics to keep infection out of her eye. She is in good spirits and is very kissy. To make putting drops in her eyes easier I wrap her up in a towel to hold her still. When the drop is in place I then I let her walk around and explore and give her a treat so she won't stop and try to groom the eye removing the drop. My fingers and hands always get sloppy kisses. She is a really good patient! The eye can't be saved and she is blind in it, but it doesn't seem to throw her balance off or hinder her in the least. She is not showing signs of being in pain. You wouldn't know she was blind in one eye if you didn't see it. Update: 08/04/10 Pearl has a eye injury. I'm thinking that Catchup the male she's been with for several weeks must have injured it by accident as they love each other very much and I was hoping for a litter from them. I've started her on prednisolone acetate ophthalmic suspension, one drop four times daily. I'm not certain at this time whether the eye can be saved or not or if she will be totally blind in this eye. Pearl had been pregnant but it appears her body has reabsorbed them due to the trauma of the eye injury. As of 07/08/10 her health is excellent. |
